The Durham Coastal Communities Environment Project was a pilot project based along the east Durham coast. The aims were to encourage the participation of local groups and schools in monitoring the changes that may occur along the 'Turning the Tide' coast over the period of its restoration.

The project hoped to raise awareness of the environmental improvements that are taking place, provide a greater understanding of the marine and coastal environment and encourage local involvement.

The east Durham coast has a proud coal mining heritage which has created close-knit communities and produced coal for over 100 years. The result of this mining, however, has produced millions of tonnes of spoil which which has resulted in an environmental image of neglect.

Following the closure of the last colliery in 1993, there is now the opportunity to transform this image. Turning the tide is an ambitious and innovative programme which aims to restore and enhance the Durham coast, encourage its sustainable use and enjoyment and rekindle a sense of pride in the area. As a result of this programme many changes will take place over the next few years along this 18km stretch of coastline.
